Aurora was down 5-0 at the start of the third period.

In a comeback that will go down as one of the biggest in tournament history, Aurora scored six straight goals to earn a 6-5 overtime victory over Bay Village in the first round of the Baron Cup III tournament Monday at the Brooklyn Recreation Center.

Junior wing Aaron Jaskiewicz scored the game-winning goal with almost two minutes expired in overtime, erasing what had been a 5-0 deficit entering the third period.

Jaskiewicz and linemate David Walker, a senior, had hat tricks, and linemate Jester Sandsjo, an exchange student from Sweden, had five assists.

Buddy Martin had a hat trick for the Rockets, who went scoreless over the last 17:55.

“We were joking that the goals were going to come in bunches once we got that first goal, but we never dreamed they’d come in bunches like that,” said Aurora coach John Sheridan. “You just can’t imagine a comeback like that until it happens.”

The Aurora Memorial Library is cutting hours as of Feb 23. In addition, staff has been cut. Don’t know why, Olive will get more information as soon as possible. Too bad.

Effective February 23: Monday, Tuesday: 11:00 – 7:00; Wednesday, Friday: 10:00 – 6:00; Saturday: 9:00-5:00 Closed on Thursday and Sunday

Seems as though there is a union involved in the negotiations, that might be why they can’t use volunteers.  More about it here

AURORA — Three Aurora nursing home residents were sickened with salmonella bacteria related to tainted peanut butter products, as the number of confirmed cases in Ohio grew to 72.

Portage County health officials said the infections occurred in December, and the department was working with the nursing homes to make sure recalled products were not being served. The agency declined to identify the nursing homes.

The salmonella outbreak, linked to a Georgia processing plant, has sickened more than 500 people in 43 states.

The Ohio Department of Health has reported that two open containers of King Nut peanut butter from a Delaware County nursing home tested positive for salmonella. King Nut Co. of Solon distributed peanut butter processed at the Georgia plant of Peanut Corp. of America.

The government has accused Peanut Corp. of knowingly distributing salmonella-tainted products as far back as 2007.

More than 400 kinds of cakes, crackers, cookies, ice cream and pet food containing peanut butter or peanut paste have been recalled. The Food and Drug Administration maintains an interactive list of the recalled products that it updates regularly.

The mayor gave a speech to members of the Chamber of Commerce and kept everything upbeat. Some interesting information here.

Aurora — Mayor Lynn McGill told attendees at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon last week– 2008 was “not the greatest year for you or me,” it was “the greatest year for Aurora.”

While giving his annual “State of the City” address to a Chamber monthly luncheon Jan. 21 at Walden Golf and Tennis Club, he added, “I count the greatest year as the year we do the most for our residents.”

As some residents and businesses struggle in these economic times, McGill said “better days are ahead” and the city is “well prepared” for those days with $4.6 million in reserve.  Read the rest here

I’ve linked to Brent writing many times and he has always tried to do a great job for Aurora.  Here is is farewell message to his readers.

Today marks the end of an era, albeit, a short era. But a very important era.
Today (Jan. 7) is my last day with the Advocate. It’s been a little less than three years since I joined the staff, and in that time I’ve really enjoyed myself. Read the rest of this entry »

Has volunteerism in Aurora has been lagging? I know our family has been feeling burnt out. But there are many many folks who volunteer in the community, for a variety of causes.

Recent stories in the Adovcate has sparked discussion from Mr. Squarepeg,  read one here.  And read about Volunteer of the Year– Don Arbuckle and Heinens.

Savoring that championship moment
by Tim Warsinskey/Plain Dealer Reporter

Aurora assistant football coach Brian Wervey.

It always amazes me how quickly a stadium empties once a state championship trophy has been handed over to its new owner. If it was me on the winning side, I’d want to stay all day, or all night, just to make the moment last longer. Once you exit the stadium, it’s just a memory.

Maybe that’s why Aurora defensive coordinator Brian Wervey was the last to leave the field  more

A championship, a Saturday Greenmen won’t forget
Sunday, November 30, 2008

Canton— They all had smiles on their faces, a few had tears in their eyes. Each one raised a single finger in the air as they posed for pictures, the state championship trophy at their feet.

Every Aurora football player will never forgot this sunny Saturday afternoon at Fawcett Stadium where the Greenmen defeated Columbus Eastmoor Academy, 21-10, to win the Division III state championship.  more

Aurora community rallies for Division III football state champions

The fans were so tightly crammed in the small auxiliary gym at Aurora High School that elbow room and air to breathe were at a premium.

But somehow those four walls accommodated the stadium-filling roar of a community that had come to honor the Division III state champion Aurora football team. Maybe the walls magically expanded. After all, this was a magical season.  more

CANTON – It’s said everyone has 15 minutes of fame.

Aurora senior Dee Brizzolara stole the spotlight for about 15 seconds during today’s 21-10, Division III state-title victory over Columbus Eastmoor Academy, but he wasn’t complaining.

“Wow, this is unbelievable,” said Brizzolara, a receiver/defensive back. “It’s really too hard to explain.” more,
CANTON – It is a story that is probably written every year across America.

Small-town team bounces back from a shaky start and goes on to win the first state football championship in school history, knocking off team after team with more size, more speed and bigger reputations.

It never gets old. Aurora added its personalized chapter to that story this afternoon when it outplayed Columbus Eastmoor Academy  more

An interesting story about an Auroran’s experiences at a pivotal moment in US history.

Former student activist Roseann Canfora remembers ducking behind a car to avoid being shot May 4, 1970, when students who were protesting the Vietnam War on the campus of Kent State University were killed by members of the Ohio National Guard.

AURORA — A 28-year-old Aurora man who completed training to be a police officer is accused of shooting his wife Sunday.

Charles Rome Jr. is charged with attempted aggravated murder.Police said Rome, of Chelmsford Drive, shot Heather Rome at a house in the 1020 block of Bryce Avenue. Heather called police at 10:01 p.m. Sunday and told them she didn’t recognize who shot her in the shoulder.

Her two children, 3 and 4, were in the house and sat near their mother as she spoke to a 9-1-1 dispatcher. She was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where she is in stable condition, Lt. Robert Hagquist said.

Charles Rome was arrested at 8:11 a.m. Monday at a business on Campus Drive. He had graduated from a police academy but had not been hired by the Aurora Police Department, Hagquist said.

1178 MonetaNeighbors on Moneta Ave. have been wondering what is going on with this run-down slummy eyesore at 1178.  Building permits were issued three years ago and the house still looks terrible.. How would you like to look at that every day?  Would this be permitted in other neighborhoods? It is owned by a Chagrin Falls resident! (click the pic for a closer view)

Rich Wehernberg, Aurora’s Planning, Zoning & Building Director & Residential Chief Building Official told Olive:
“There are currently open building permits on 1178 Moneta allowing the construction you see going on there. The residential building code, which is mandated to us by the State of Ohio, provides no expiration date for permits and in fact does not allow us to revoke any permits as long as some work is done every six months in furtherance of the permits. The work is proceeding slowly, but the pace of completion is as allowed by law.

That being said, the applicant has been very cooperative when we have approached him with our concerns or a complaint from the public. In the past, for example, he has cleaned up the site and organized his building supplies in an acceptably neat manner when asked to do so. Most recently, in response to our request, he has agreed to provide us with a timetable for completion of the exterior of the house.”

Councilman Jim Vaca has received many complaints and inquiries from Geauga Lake residents about the structure. “I and they want something to be done, he said, “but there has been little progress in the past three years. The house is in a state of deterioration, the tyvek is ripped off by the wind and the structural elements are exposed to the weather.”  He added, “I’d like to see this timetable he’s promised.”

This house looks worse than when the Chagrin Falls resident bought it, and brought his plans to ABR. His intent was to improve the property and sell it, but it has become an eyesore. The situation with this house need attention from City Council since it is a nuisance and ought to be the subject of legal action by the city.  In these lean times we ought to be doing everything we can as a city to keep up our housing stock.  The city has ordinances on the books which could clean up this mess of a house.

IMHO,    Here’s what council could do: Read the rest of this entry »

From the Aurora Advocate

Carrinton Youth Academy has presented details of their plan to convert the former Geauga Lake hotel to a academic, recreational and clinical treatment center for youth to Aurora’s Planning Commission.

The facility would be supervised by Ohio Department of Youth and Family Services and would house from overflow foster care, abuse, family/community/school problems anxiety disorders  emotional disturbances and just about every other type of diagnosis.

The you would be there only a short time representatives say, a few days or a few  months.

Representative said the facilyt would not be a detention center or court order center for juveniles.

My questions are: will these kids go into the Aurora schools?  What guarantees are there that this facility will not change uses in the future and  become a detriment to the community.  Will these kids be socialized into the community at the movies or other events?  Where do these kids come from? Portage County? Cleveland, Geauga county?

The building will also continue to be run as a hotel. I don’t get it? Who’s going to stay there, their relatives?

The Aurora City council and the Planing Commission need to grant a conditional zoning permit for the property. I hope there will be public opportunities for the community to voice their opinions.
